Alright, let me start off by saying I’m honored to be a part of the KYS Crew. This website is all in one everything you need to know about events and culture in the Boston area. Now, let me get to this amazing double CD by Gerald Walker.
Gerald Walker is a guy who comes from very humble beginnings, which I believe has the greatest influence on his music. He was born and raised in the Windy City of Chicago where he learned about himself, his views, and religion. At around the age of 14 he moved with his mother to Milwaukee where his love for music began to flourish. But (no offense Gerald) lets get to this music.
Somehow, this CD even exceeded my expectations. I’ve known about Gerald since 2011 when in college. I soon became borderline obsessed with his mixtapes “On You Side” and “Believers Never Die”. His style is unlike any that I have ever heard. He mixes a smooth, soulful flow with bars that will leave you satisfied and a fan for life. The mixture of singing and rapping keeps every song interesting and makes you listen to each of his words.
The CD encapsulates all of the important things in life. Family, friends, God, and yourself. Not only is the music, but each song’s title has deeper meaning than what meets the eye. With tracks like “Yawning at Tigers”, “No Heart Feelings”, and “Lessons of the Dead Taught by the Dying” you can tell that it’s more than just the music to him… it’s his life.
Most rappers now appear to mainly rap about hoes, bling, and materials. He SPECIFICALLY does not rap about these and calls out all phony ass rappers in the song “No More”. Rappers like Future are on Gerald’s list of fake rappers with no substance and for a bulk, I fully agree. When you listen to Gerald Walker’s music, not only is it nice on the ears, but you feel like you are a part of something bigger, a family. He’s a humble artist who, if anyone, deserves all of the glory. Honestly, if he was a Pastor, you’d see me in church every Sunday. I attached one of my favorite songs from the album, “No Heart Feelings” for your listening pleasure.
All in all, do yourself a favor and LISTEN TO THIS MUSIC!!! When you find someone as real as Gerald, you just hope that the rest of the world can hear his vision as clearly as you can. I give this Album 5 out of 5 blunts simply because you should just sit there and roast with the homies for a few hours and really grasp the whole concept Gerald is going for. I also want to personally thank Gerald for helping me get through some difficult times with his music. Crazy what music can do for your soul, isn’t it?….
